Are Implant-Supported Dentures Worth It?
For many Canadians, traditional dentures are a reliable way to restore missing teeth, but they aren’t the only option.
Implant-supported dentures are increasingly seen as the new standard of care, offering major advantages in comfort, stability, and everyday function. For many patients, they provide a more secure and natural-feeling alternative to conventional dentures.
In this guide, we’ll explain what implant-supported dentures are and how they compare to traditional dentures, why they are becoming the standard of care, the benefits, what to expect and frequently asked questions.
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Unlike traditional dentures that sit on top of your gums, implant-supported dentures are anchored to implants placed in your jaw. This gives them a much more secure fit, less slipping, better chewing, and overall, a more comfortable day-to-day experience.
Here’s the part that surprises a lot of patients: most patients are eligible for implants. Even if you’ve lost some bone or been told in the past that you don’t qualify, things may have changed. Today’s techniques are far more advanced, and it’s actually rare that we can’t find a solution. So don’t count yourself out without speaking to a professional first!
Implant-supported dentures can be used for either full or partial tooth loss, and are available in the following applications:
Snap-In Dentures (Removable)
These clip onto 2 to 4 implants and can be taken out for cleaning. They’re a great option for many of my patients because they offer the stability of implants, while still being easy to maintain.
Fixed Dentures (Non-Removable)
These are held in place with small screws and can only be removed by a dental professional. They feel the most like natural teeth and require the least day-to-day fuss.
Both are excellent options and in many cases, we can work within your budget to find a solution that gives you both comfort and peace of mind.
Traditional Dentures vs Implant-Supported Dentures
Here’s how implant-supported dentures compare to traditional options:

How Long Do Implant-Supported Dentures Last?
With proper care, the dental implants themselves can last a lifetime, and many are backed by lifetime warranties from providers due to their proven durability.
However, the prosthetic denture component (the visible teeth) typically lasts between 8 and 10 years. This lifespan varies depending on materials, usage, and daily maintenance.
Factors That Influence Longevity:
- Daily oral hygiene and proper cleaning habits
- Routine relines or adjustments to ensure optimal fit
- Dietary choices, such as avoiding extremely hard or sticky foods
- Annual checkups with a licensed denturist to assess wear and oral health
Proper upkeep and regular follow-up care are essential in maximizing the lifespan of both the implants and the denture.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures offer multiple clinical and quality-of-life advantages, particularly for patients who have struggled with the fit or function of traditional dentures. For individuals on fixed incomes, these dentures also represent a long-term investment in oral health that can reduce future dental costs.
Improved Chewing and Stability
These dentures provide superior stability during eating, allowing patients to enjoy a wider range of foods, including tougher or crunchier options, without fear of slippage.
At Saberton, we’ll educate you on how best to adjust to eating with your new dentures so you can still eat your favourite foods with confidence.
Preservation of Jawbone and Facial Structure
After tooth loss, your jawbone naturally begins to shrink through a process called bone resorption. Because implants sit within the bone, they mimic a real tooth root, helping support the bone and facial structure.
Minimized Movement
Compared to traditional dentures, implant-supported options are significantly more secure. Whether the system is fixed or removable, the risk of shifting or dislodging is dramatically reduced.
Enhanced Confidence & Natural Appearance
Many patients say the biggest benefit is feeling like themselves again. Whether it's smiling, laughing, or dining out, implant-supported dentures often boost self-esteem and daily comfort because they’re the closest you can get to your regular teeth.
What to Expect from the Denture On Implant Process
Getting implant-supported dentures is a multistep procedure, typically completed in partnership with a dentist and/or dental surgeon. Here’s what you can expect:
Consultation
Your denturist will walk you through your options and refer you to a dental specialist for scans to arm your denturist with optimal information to personalize your treatment plan. Your denturist and dentist will work together seamlessly on your behalf, so you don’t have to worry about any coordination.
Implant Procedure
A dental surgeon will place your dental implant(s). Healing generally takes 3–6 months as the bone fuses with the implant.
Temporary Dentures
While healing, a temporary denture may be provided to maintain function and appearance.
Final Fitting
Once healing is complete, your custom denture is securely fitted.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have extracted or expect to extract several teeth
- Want a more secure, natural-feeling solution
- Are interested in preserving facial structure and bone density
Even if you’ve experienced some bone loss, modern treatment plans can often accommodate implants, sometimes with the help of bone grafting or alternate placements.
FAQs About Implant-Supported Dentures
Do implant-supported dentures feel natural?
Yes! Many patients report they feel more like real teeth than traditional dentures.
Can I remove my implant dentures at night?
Snap-in styles can be removed to sleep and clean. However, fixed dentures may only be removed by your dentist for maintenance and cleaning.
Is the procedure painful?
Not typically. Because bone doesn’t have pain receptors, most patients only experience mild soreness from the gum tissue.
The good news is local anesthetic is used during your procedure to reduce any discomfort, and over-the-counter pain medication is usually sufficient afterward.
