How Long to Get Dentures: What to Expect from First Visit to Final Fit

So you need dentures. For our patients, that means getting back to eating properly, smiling with confidence, and just feeling like yourself again. But before you get there, one question tends to pop up: How long does it take to get dentures?

If you're just starting the process, or helping someone who is, this breakdown walks you through it, one step at a time.

Saberton’s helped more than 30,000 patients rediscover their smile, and we’re here to make sure you know what to expect, without any guesswork.

First Visit: What Happens at the Initial Consultation

It all starts with a simple, friendly and free consultation where your denturist takes a look at your teeth, asks some questions, and helps you figure out what denture solution(s) might work best for your unique needs.

Sometimes the teeth are already gone. Other times, a few need to come out first. No matter where you're starting from, this appointment is about building a plan that makes sense for you.

If you want to get a feel for that first appointment ahead of time, check out this guide on getting your first dentures.

Tooth Extractions & Healing (If Needed)

Your gums generally need around 6 to 8 weeks to settle after extractions. The exact healing time mostly depends on how many teeth are removed and whether they’re posterior (back) teeth like molars, which tend to take longer. Molars have multiple roots and displace more bone, meaning the socket is larger and needs extra time to heal. While this stage can feel like a waiting game, it’s worth it — proper healing helps your final dentures fit better and last longer.

Some patients don’t want to go without teeth during that time (totally understandable). That’s where immediate dentures come in. They’re placed at the same appointment that the teeth are pulled, so you leave with a full smile. Just know they’ll need a few tweaks as your gums shrink and change shape. Most people wear them for up to a year before getting their permanent set.

Taking Impressions & the Lab Timeline

Once your gums are healed, or right away (if no extractions were needed), it’s time to take impressions. These are dental moulds that help create dentures that fit just right.

After that, your file goes to the lab. That’s where the real magic happens!

Depending on the details, it usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for your dentures to be created. The lab’s timeline depends on how busy they are and how complex your case is, but Saberton keeps you in the loop every step of the way.

For patients considering newer options, digital dentures can speed things up even more. These are created using advanced scanning, design, and milling technology, which can shorten the overall process compared to traditional methods.

Try-Ins & Adjustments

Before you get your final set, there’s a “try-in” step. Think of it like trying on clothes before you buy them, only this one’s for your smile!

You’ll test a wax version of the denture to see how it fits and feels. Most of the time, it's spot on for the first time! On the rare occasion, it may take a second try-in to fine-tune the look and comfort. Every round of adjustments usually adds about a week. But, we promise that it’s worth it to get the fit just right!

The more effort we put into this part, the less chance you’ll need fixes down the road.

Final Fit & Follow-Up Visits

During the fitting appointment, they’re placed and checked for comfort, bite, and overall feel. The visit usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and you’ll leave knowing exactly how to care for them.

It’s totally normal to come back for one or two follow-ups in the first few weeks. Your mouth is adjusting, and small tweaks make a big difference in comfort. Saberton’s team is there to make sure everything settles just right.

Timeline Overview: How Long Does It Take in Total?

Here’s a rough guide to how long the denture process might take:

Estimated timelines for different denture types
Denture Type Estimated Timeline
Immediate Dentures Immediate dentures are placed at the same appointment as the extractions, with follow-up adjustments
Conventional Dentures 4–8 weeks (after healing)
With Extractions + Healing 8–16 weeks total
Digital Dentures Typically ready in 3–5 weeks and often completed in just 3–4 visits (scan, try-in, and delivery). Digital design and milling improve accuracy and strength, while cutting down manual steps.

The process varies depending on your specific needs. But at Saberton, the team keeps you informed every step of the way.

Factors That Can Affect Your Timeline

Not everyone’s denture timeline looks the same. Some patients sail through it. Others hit a few detours. So what makes the difference?

  • Extractions: If teeth need to be removed, healing time is the biggest factor. It depends on how many teeth are pulled and which ones. Posterior (back) teeth like molars often take longer since they have more roots and leave larger sockets to heal.
  • How fast you heal: Gums and bones take their own time to settle. Every person’s body is unique and will heal differently, and depends primarily on how many (and which) teeth were extracted.
  • Try-in adjustments: More fittings mean better comfort for your denture!
  • Lab speed: Some labs are quick. Others can take longer. We always do our best to fabricate each Saberton denture as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Type of denture: Full, partial, or implant-supported all follow different timelines.
  • Digital vs. conventional methods: Digital dentures can be significantly faster thanks to streamlined lab work. In some cases, timelines may improve even further as new in-house technology becomes available.

Also, the type of teeth and base you choose can affect fit and how often adjustments are needed.

Your Saberton denturist will walk you through these. No guesswork needed!

Digital Dentures: A Faster, More Precise Option

Not every patient chooses conventional dentures. Digital dentures are a newer option that can cut down both the time and the number of visits needed to get your final smile.

Here’s what to expect with digital dentures:

  • Timeline: Most patients receive their final set in 3 to 5 weeks, compared to a longer period of time with conventional dentures.
  • Appointments: Typically just 3 to 4 visits; an initial scan, a try-in appointment, and final delivery.
  • Benefits of Digital Dentures:
    • Speed: Digital design and milling streamline the process, reducing wait times along the way.
    • Accuracy: Design that is aided by digital technology helps create a fit that’s precise and comfortable.
    • Strength: The materials used in digital dentures are highly durable and long-lasting.

Digital dentures aren’t the right solution for everyone. But, for many patients, they’re an efficient, comfortable, and reliable choice.

Want to Get Through the Process Faster? Here’s How.

While some parts of the journey are out of your hands, there’s a lot you can do to keep things moving:

  • Stick to your appointments. Skipping just one can push everything back.
  • Follow aftercare advice. Especially after extractions or fittings.
  • Speak up early. Noticing a pressure spot or loose fit? Let your denturist know right away.
  • Consider immediate dentures. They’re not for everyone, but they can help bypasses the “toothless” waiting phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be without teeth during the process?

Not necessarily. Immediate dentures allow you to leave with a smile the same day as extractions, but they may need more adjustments early on.

How long until dentures feel comfortable?

Most people get used to them in a few weeks. Minor discomfort is normal at first but gets better with time and follow-up care.

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, 5 to 10 years. Over time, your gums and jaw may change shape, making a reline or replacement necessary.
