Can Implants Be Added to the Dentures You Already Have?
Dental Implants

It took a while to get to this point. The sore spots in the first few weeks. Rehearsing certain words until they stopped whistling. Working out which side to chew on and which foods to cut smaller to make it easy for you to chew and digest. Somewhere along the way, your dentures stopped feeling like something new and started feeling like yours.
Then they start moving again. A slip mid-sentence. A little bit more adhesive in the morning than there used to be.
For a lot of people, the hardest part of thinking about implants isn't the implants. It's the idea of going through all of that again.
I just got used to these. I'm not starting over.
That's a fair thing to feel. But adding implants isn't the same as starting over.
Can Implants Be Added to the Dentures You Already Have?
In most cases, a new set is made to fit the implants, and that's not the step backward it sounds like. What makes sense for you is something a denturist works out with you at a free consultation in the clinic, not something you need to figure out on your own. Whether implants are right for you at all is confirmed by our surgical partner.
With Dentures on Implants (DOI), a small number of implants (usually 2 to 4) are placed in your jaw. The dentures then snap onto them, so they're held in place instead of resting on your gums alone. They still come out for cleaning, just like the dentures you wear now.
The difference you notice: they move much less when you're eating and talking.
What Changes When Implants Hold Your Dentures in Place?
Most of the work of wearing dentures is managing movement. Chewing on one side. Skipping the steak. Adjusting your smile so nothing shows that shouldn't. The adhesive routine that keeps getting longer.
When implants hold your dentures in place, a lot of that management gets taken off your plate. The goal is eating without planning around it, and laughing without that small moment of worry first. If you want the full side-by-side, our guide to snap-in dentures compared with traditional dentures walks through it, and if you're wondering why your fit drifted in the first place, here's why dentures start to feel loose.
What Does a Denturist Look At First?
The answer depends on things a denturist has to see and measure in person, which is why no website can answer it for you.
How They Fit Right Now
The first thing a denturist checks is how your dentures sit on your gums today. That tells them a lot about where to start, and whether a reline or a new set would serve you better.
How Worn the Teeth Are
Denture teeth wear down with use, and that changes how your top and bottom teeth meet when you chew. An older set may be close to needing replacing anyway, which can make a new set made for implants the more sensible step.
If You've Been in Dentures a Long Time
Your gums and jaw aren't the same shape they were the day your dentures were made, which is part of why they move. If you've been in dentures for a long time and you're wondering whether that rules you out, this is worth reading on whether it's too late after years in dentures.
None of this can be judged in the mirror. That's what the free consultation is for.
If You Need New Dentures, Are You Starting Over?
Here's what we want you to know: it isn't the same as starting over!
A big part of getting used to your last set was learning to keep them in place, because they were resting on your gums. Which way to chew, how to hold your mouth, when to press them back into place.
A new set made for implants is designed around the mouth you have today and around the clips from the start. Your denturist sets the teeth for how your face looks now, not how it looked when your last set was made. And once it's delivered, it's held in place by the implants, so the job of keeping it there isn't all yours this time.
Once you're a patient, new dentures also come with 90 days of free adjustments. If it's not perfect, we make it right.
For some people, a denture on a bar (DOB), sometimes called DOI on a bar, is also worth a conversation. That's where the dentures clip onto a bar that joins the implants. Our dental implant options guide explains how it compares.
Who Plans It, and Who Places the Implants?
At Saberton Denture & Implant, your denturist plans the case; our surgical partner places the implants. The person who will make your teeth is part of the plan from the start, not brought in at the end. It's one team from your first conversation to your final smile.
If you'd like to see every step in order, here's what the full process looks like, and our dentures on implants page covers the service itself.
What About Cost?
Every patient gets one clear, rounded, all-in quote we stand behind. You'll know exactly what it costs before you pay us anything. Payment plans are available, and our goal is to find an option that works for your budget.
You Don't Have to Start From Scratch to Find Out
Wanting to keep what you've gotten used to is a completely fair thing to want. It can take months to get here! Finding out what's possible doesn't commit you to anything, and it's free because you should understand your options before you decide anything.
With 8 clinics across Ontario's golden horseshoe, Saberton Denture & Implant starts with a free initial discussion: a short call with our team about where you are and what you'd like to change.
