For a lot of denture wearers, the day starts with a small, automatic check. Press the tongue up against the roof of the mouth for a second, just to feel if anything shifted overnight. Nobody taught you to do this. It just became part of getting up in the morning, the same as brushing your teeth.

Why Do Dentures Start to Feel Loose?

The jawbone changes after teeth are gone. Once the bone underneath dentures is no longer holding natural teeth in place, it shrinks. That's not a "sometimes." It's how bone behaves when the pressure and stimulation it used to get from tooth roots disappears. A denture replaces more than the teeth. It's also standing in for the bone that used to fill out that part of the jaw, which is part of why the fit keeps changing even when nothing else has.

Your denture, on the other hand, was shaped to fit the bone and gum tissue you had on the day it was made. It doesn't shrink or reshape along with you. So the fit that felt solid the first year gradually stops matching the mouth underneath it, not because anything went wrong with the denture, but because the mouth kept changing and the denture didn't.

Weight changes, medication, and simple time all add to it. A denture that fit well two years ago can genuinely need a different fit today, on the same person, with nothing "wrong" having happened in between.

Is It Just a Reline, or Something More?

Will a reline actually hold, or am I just delaying the same problem? It depends on how much the bone has changed and how long it's been.
